Lola is a mellow dog. But there are some things — like squirrels and certain noises — that drive her bananas.
The other afternoon she heard something outside our window and jumped onto the white canvas armchair. Since then she’s made the chair her new favorite napping spot.
Sammy Sanchez was back in the water this weekend! Sammy was captivated by the wildlife at the Dog Beach. So captivated that he jumped into the water and swam after the ducks!
At one point he got pretty close but the ducks swam away. He seemed unimpressed by the turtle.
Sammy Sanchez is no Michael Phelps but he’s less afraid of swimming to the deep end.
My doggie paddle needs some work.
When the weather is warm again next spring, he’ll be ready for some more dips at the Dog Beach.
and are the two magazines I look forward to seeing in my mailbox and read from cover-to-cover. This week’s New York is a special issue commemorating its .
We’ve been reading a couple of pages of the issue every evening while we watch the baseball playoffs. Sammy really chuckled at the Conan O’Brien sidebar where he recalls many years ago as having an impression of Williamsburg as a place where people churned butter. Instead, he said the reality was more like a “postapocalyptic crack wasteland.”
Sammy and Lola watched me carefully on Monday morning as I got ready to go for work. They knew something was different. Where was the other guy? Why isn’t he around to take us out? Why was our long and leisurely morning walk cut short? And where do you think we are going?
The disruption in their weekday routine unsettled them a little bit. So they lined up in the hallway and monitored my movements. Thankfully there was no barking or whining when I left, much later than usual and feeling sad and guilty.
The dog walker left a cheerful note about their afternoon walk. Sammy and Lola were just fine.
It’s just the three of us this weekend since a last-minute out-of-town shooting assignment came up. The dogs were a tiny bit unsettled in the morning and wandered around the apartment to see if they had missed someone. Their lonesome meandering was soon followed by a series of naps and water breaks. They seem settled now.
Since things are out of sorts, I decided to treat the dogs to a long walk in the park. We passed by the Dog Beach and my plan was to continue further into the park, however Lola wasn’t having it. When Lola wants to do in a different direction, she does this maneuver where she sits and scratches her back with her hind leg, as if she’s just taking a little break. But what she’s really trying to do is get me to stop and turn around in the direction she wants to go.
That’s how it was when we got to the Dog Beach. She must have stopped to scratch her back at least five times. So, I gave in and let her off the leash. We played fetch with a stick but Lola was clever and swam over to a rubber ball that had been left behind. I must have thrown it into the water about 25 times. We had the entire Dog Beach to ourselves and Lola was having the time of her life. Even the turtle and the four ducks didn’t distract her from the fun she was having!
We captured a rare moment between Sammy and Lola as they napped side-by-side in the back of the car during a long drive.
It’s not often you see the two of them snuggling together like this. Most days, these guys are barely tolerant of each other. That’s because Sammy bosses Lola around and acts as her referee. And Lola does her best to ignore him.
But there are moments like this one when they show a curiosity or tenderness for one another. And like when we come home from a run with Lola and Sammy jumps up to greet her with a kiss on the nose. Or when Lola checks in on Sammy after he cries out for no reason. They’re still not the best of friends, but they sure have gotten closer over the past year.
Sammy and Lola have a two “cousins” who live in Washington, D.C. Skippy’s already gotten a lot of press on this blog.
Peanuts is the other buddy, a fellow Yorkshire Terrier, who is very playful and disobedient, but loving. He’s a good doggy, but somethings make him go bananas.
Like the mailman. Every day, when the mailman opens the gate and approaches the house. Skippy starts barking and running around like a lunatic. Nothing stops him.
He’d be a perfect case study for the Dog Whisperer!
